Traditionally, in Chinese brush painting or sumi-e, the black ink stick is made from pine charcoal and glue which is pressed into a mould. To create the ink, the stick is ground with a little water on an ink stone; the ink stone and ink stick are said to go together like husband and wife so must be carefully chosen to work harmoniously together. The colors are made from vegetable and mineral dyes. The red chops or seals on paintings are created by stamps carved from stones and may represent the name of the artist, the studio or a saying, like “Drunk with Ink”
