I use many different kinds of handmade paper to achieve a desired effect.
Handmade rice paper (shuen) of varying thicknesses, finishes and absorbency is a favored painting surface, while some Chinese brush artists prefer cotton paper, mulberry paper and shikishi boards. The papers vary widely in quality, with Red Star Shuen being the highest. Thin, unsized (absorbent) rice paper is best for the quick strokes and brilliant colors of flower and bird painting. Artists of the Ling Nan School such as Au Ho-Nien and Henry Wo favor thick cotton paper that can withstand multiple washes to create soft, dreamlike backgrounds of rainy moons and mysterious mists.
