The Chinese brush may be handmade of weasel, goat, wolf, sheep, ox or horse hair, depending on the stroke desired. Goat and sheep hair are soft and good for flower petals and big leaves such as peony and lotus, while weasel, being stiffer, will produce a springy bamboo or orchid leaf. Mountain horse hair is ideal for creating texture in landscapes, where a more broken line is desirable. Some brushes are a mix of hairs so the artist has the benefit of soft hairs to hold a lot of color, but stiffer bristles round the perimeter to give a clean line. Brushes bear exotic names like “Big Dragon”, “Best Idea” and “Red Bean” and are made painstakingly, one hair at a time, by skilled artisans.
