Frogs are hopping out of my sumi-e brush these days, becoming more energetic by the minute. Here's a sampling of the last few years of frogs. Some are whimsical and some are wicked. Some were painted in a moment of exuberance, and some brought me comfort when I was sick. Painting's like that.
Tree Frog on a Post
My most recent frog. She looks a little shy!
A Plethora of Frogs
I practice a lot, filling up sheets of rice paper. A lot get thrown out, but then sometimes, they are just too much fun to jettison!
Frog and Daylily
Painted in 2013, this one reminds me of the frog in "Tubby the Tuba"
Home Delivery!
Sometimes a story just emerges! I don't usually write on my paintings, but this one seemed to call for a poem.
Frog and Dragonfly
The dragonfly thinks it's safe, but the frog wears a knowing smile!
Puny Frog
Painted in 2016, Puny Frog is a poignant reminder of the cancer treatment I was undergoing at the time. I tried to get into my studio every day. The ch'i was struggling this time.
Hey Babe, come on over to my pad.
I asked for suggestions for a title on this one. My husband's suggestion got the most votes. Some of the other wonderful ideas: "Any chance this Virginia chick is up for a kiss?" (Alistair in Scotland), "Kvaky-Kvak!" (Eva in Czech Republic), "No Frenchman around, let's have fun" (Didier in France), "A Ribbiting Moment" (Janice in USA), "Care to Dance" and "Frog Dance" (Cherie and Tim in USA), and my second most favorite, "What did you do with that tuba?" from my erstwhile puppet partner Larry in Florida. There were many others from sweet and friendly to a little bizarre. Thank you all for your ideas! I loved them all!
Froggy Frolics
Painted on HM004 "antique" raw xuan from HMay Art. The paper has an interesting mellow color and a little sizing which prevents the ink from running and smudging. I like the look for lotus and some landscapes.
Frogs for Aidan
Created in 2014 as a birthday present for the grandson of a friend of mine. Those colors just jump off the paper.
Frogs Plotting
What can I say? Sumi-e supposedly reflects our emotions. What was I thinking????

I love these frogs.
Thanks Dennis!
First of all, I love those oh-so-happy day lilies and the froggy enjoying their beauty. The puny frog makes me both sad that you had to go through that horrific time and happy that you were optimistic enough to paint. My favorite is still that wistful girl on the post! Love you! Love your work!
Thanks, MaryAnne! I am loving the way these frog characters are hopping out of the brush! They always surprise me! Come paint with me again when the weather cools down.
